MSF teams continue their activities in the Irrawaddy Delta

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams continue their relief work in the south-west delta region of Myanmar. MSF teams are providing healthcare to the survivors by running four mobile clinics on small boats in the periphery of the towns of Bogaley and Pyapon.

MSF is also distributing kits of non-food items and plastic sheeting in the delta. Last weekend alone, teams from MSF distributed over 4100 plastic sheetings for shelter, 4300 mosquito nets and therapeutic food in Pyapon and surrounding villages. Approximately 280 medical consultations were undertaken, mainly in relation to respiratory infections, fever and diarrhoea.

In the township of Bogaley, MSF teams provided 140 consultations and distributed 155 plastic sheets for shelter and 250 mosquito nets over the weekend.

In both Bogaley and Pyapon, MSF teams noted the lack of access to drinking water to the population. The main source of safe drinking water currently is rain water only.

MSF has worked in Myanmar since 1992. At present, 250 MSF staff are working in the Irawaddy Delta in the areas of Pyapon, Bogaley, Haingyi, Pyinsalu, Tongwa, Labutta, Thingangon and Chaungzu. Some 30 international staff are mostly confined to Yangon.
