5 Minutes To Explain – The importance of vaccination during cholera epidemics
Several months ago, at the beginning of 2018, tens of thousands of Congolese refugees arrived in Uganda, fleeing an outbreak of violence in northeast Democratic Republic of Congo. In the space of just a few weeks, over 50,000 people crossed Lake Albert in search of refuge. This massive influx quickly overwhelmed the reception system and, with insufficient latrines and clean water points, cholera broke out in the middle of February. There were over 2,000 severe cases and 39 people died.
