Doctors must be free to speak out for their patients

26 Apr 2016

Médecins Sans Frontières Australia supports its President Dr Stewart Condon’s decision to speak out in last night's ABC 4 Corners story about the medical treatment and death of Manus Island detainee Hamid Khazaei in 2014.

As an organisation founded on the principles of universal medical ethics, and the obligation of doctors to speak out against violations of their patient’s humanitarian needs, we support doctors who independently decide to speak out about harmful policies towards people seeking asylum.

This tragic story is another reminder of the harm that policies such as boat turn-backs, offshore processing and mandatory detention can cause.
