On March 14, Tropical Cyclone Idai hit the coastal town of Beira in Mozambique, with winds of up to 200 kilometres per hour and relentlessly heavy rains. In its wake, a city of close to 500,000 inhabitants has been left destroyed, and the storm’s impact has affected people as far inland as Zimbabwe and Malawi.
While we are still assessing the full scale of Cyclone Idai’s terrible impact, it is clear the needs will be immense. Médecins Sans Frontières teams are on the ground in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi, providing medical emergency support to the populations affected.
