Madu was cared for by the Médecins Sans Frontières team at Magaria district hospital, Niger. Like Madu, many of the children admitted to emergency arrive when their conditions have already drastically worsened — the distance from rural communities to the hospitals, growing violence and insecurity are often the reasons behind these late arrivals.
Madu is the youngest of my kids. He is normally playing with his sisters and brothers, but we are struggling economically, and he has fallen sick twice. Last time he was all swollen: the face, the body… he could barely open his eyes.
Our main concern is food. Harvests are never enough. Sometimes they go well and we can eat, but when they are bad some children die. This year it’s not good; our stocks are already empty.
