In 2022, MSF teams around the world continued to respond to crises, old and new. While COVID-19 was not the emergency it was in previous years, new challenges arose. The war in Ukraine escalated in February; the political, humanitarian and economic crises in Haiti deteriorated severely; cholera emerged on an exceptional scale in several countries.

On 7 December, two medical evacuations were organised by the Geo Barents team: one for the nine-month pregnant woman to Malta by helicopter, the other for Fatima*, her newborn baby Ali* and her three other sons to Lampedusa.

The rest of the 249 survivors remain aboard waiting for a place of safety to disembark.

Major floods have hit central and southern Chad since mid-August, with the latest floods affecting the capital, N’Djamena, where rivers have burst their banks and whole neighbourhoods have been left underwater.

International medical organisation Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has launched an emergency response to address the most acute needs of people left with minimal access to basic services and exposed to heightened risks of infectious disease outbreaks.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) started an Ebola emergency mission in Uganda, after the outbreak has been declared on September 20th.

The teams are involved in supporting the Ministry of Health (MOH) in case management and are doing health promotion, a major pillar in fighting the disease. Outreach activities take place in Mubende and Kasanda, where the first cases were identified in September, and have now started in Kampala and Masaka.

In 2002, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams opened the first outpatient treatment centre offering free care to people living with HIV in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Twenty years later, while great progress has been achieved in the country, major gaps remain in testing and treatment, causing thousands of preventable deaths each year.

The war in Ukraine has been particularly devastating for people in towns and cities in the country’s east, including in Donetsk oblast (region).

As Ukrainian forces retake cities that had been under Russian control – some for many months – a picture is emerging of the harsh conditions residents have endured, with many having gone without access to healthcare, electricity or water.
