Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is partnering with the local volunteer organisation, Way of Ukraine, who run a transit shelter in Zernove in Kharkiv region. 

A retrospective mortality survey carried out among Sudanese refugees in Chad documents the appalling scale of violence that swept through the region last June, while atrocities have continued in recent months in the region of El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur. 

At one hour past midnight on January 7, a fire broke out in Camp 5, one of the 33 camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. 

As a result, 7,000 Rohingya refugees are now without shelter. Again.

Dr Monica Costeira from Portugal is a paediatrician in MSF’s project in Mazar-i-Sharif in Balkh Province of Afghanistan. Following a four month assignment, she reports on the gaps in access to paediatric and neonatal healthcare for mothers in northern Afghanistan and describes the strength and resilience of families and children at the Mazar-i-Sharif Regional Hospital.

In 2012, a year after war broke out in Syria Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) opened a burn care unit in Atmeh, in northwestern Syria’s Idlib province. It is currently the only facility treating burn patients in northwestern Syria, home to more than more than 4.5 million people, most of whom are displaced. 

The recent escalation of the Israel-Gaza war has only exacerbated the violence and restrictions imposed on the Palestinians living in the West Bank. 

In August 2023, MSF launched medical services at Mazar-i-Sharif Regional Hospital in Balkh Province in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health, aiming to reduce paediatric and neonatal mortality rates in the northern provinces.

Set up two years ago, MSF’s South Sudan Emergency Response Unit (SSERU) was designed as a first responder to crises across South Sudan and to reinforce MSF’s preparedness for dealing with emergencies. This article describes the SSERU’s first major emergency response which took place in Paloich in July and August 2023.
