Head of Fundraising

Reporting to the Director of Engagement this senior strategic role will provide guidance to our renowned fundraising team, lifting their capability to deliver best in class fundraising programs; it will represent MSFA both within the Australian fundraising sector and internationally across the MSF movement; and hold significant accountability for contributing to Médecins Sans Frontières Australia continued ability to provide funding for positive patient outcomes in the field.  

The 2021 income of Médecins Sans Frontières Australia and Médecins Sans Frontières New Zealand totalled $112.8 million. Of this, $105.5 million was generated from fundraising activities, all from private sources.

To ensure future fundraising targets are met, your core tasks will include development of the Fundraising Department’s strategic and annual planning processes; the design of  multi-year income forecasts and budgets; overseeing the development of marketing activities to generate revenue; interacting with philanthropists who support our work; ensure legislative and regulatory compliance; contribute to organisational policy, positioning, and governance; close collaboration with the Digital Marketing team; and managing the stewardship of the MSF brand.

Additionally, as an efficacious member of the broad Leadership Team, you will be instrumental in contributing to the general direction and positive culture of the Sydney office!

What you will bring

The custodian of this highly visible and influential role will be known for their proven capability developing innovative and creative Direct Marketing campaigns as well as successful programs across Major Gifts, Legacy, Corporate and Regular Giving.  You’ll enjoy accountability and will be motivated by being part of a humanitarian aid organisation. Ideally you can demonstrate:

  • Minimum of 7-10 years fundraising management experience in the not-for-profit sector
  • Demonstrable experience of designing and implementing data focused fundraising strategies
  • Proven experience managing and developing a team
  • Highly numerate with practical analytical skills
  • Ability to adapt and adjust to changing environments, markets, social, political, plan/budgets
  • Demonstrable experience in developing and monitoring complex budgets
  • Experience in participating and guiding strategic planning processes  
  • Experience in project management and change management
  • Ability to travel (domestic and international) as required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and negotiation skills
  • Fundraising Institute Australia (FIA) Code Course completion
  • Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) credential completion (preferred)
