Ebola Update
The Ebola crisis currently taking hold in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and to a lesser extent in Uganda, is continuing to worsen.
As of 8 June, officials in the DRC reported 115 confirmed deaths, 598 confirmed cases, 138 suspected cases and 22 patients as having recovered.
In Uganda, authorities have confirmed 19 cases and one death as of 5 June.
But the reality is that nobody knows the true scale and severity of this outbreak.
New suspected cases are being reported daily, and due to the challenging nature of this crisis occurring in a context of ongoing armed conflict, hundreds of samples remain untested.
The outbreak is developing rapidly and is expected to be one of the largest and fastest-growing Ebola outbreaks seen to date.
“Never before has an Ebola outbreak recorded so many cases so soon after its declaration.”
Dr Alan Gonzalez, deputy director of operations for MSF.
MSF isn’t just responding to this crisis by shipping supplies into the region – we are one of very few organisations with medical and logistical teams are on the ground in the DRC and Uganda, working with the local ministries of health to actively respond to this outbreak.
More than 50 international mobile staff will soon be joining approximately 505 locally hired staff across affected locations. That includes several Australians who are travelling to the region to offer their unique experience and expertise. Because MSF has responded to multiple Ebola outbreaks in the past, we retain expert knowledge in how to practically manage these situations.
Some of the world’s leading Ebola experts work for MSF, and due to our ongoing presence in the DRC and Uganda, we are uniquely placed to rapidly scale up our response and spring into action to help.
This is especially complex in the DRC where an ongoing armed conflict and existing health needs present a situation of compounding crises.
Please support our Emergency Fund today so that we can continue to provide medical care to so many people in the more than 70 countries where we work who desperately need our help.
