NeglectNepal-Tibet Flood Update

After a major flash flood struck the Rasuwa district in Nepal this week, where flood waves are estimated to have been up to 8-10 metres high in some locations, hundreds of people are feared dead, and many more are still missing.  

A Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) team experienced in providing emergency responses arrived in Nepal less than 24 hours after the floods struck to assess people’s immediate needs. MSF stands ready to provide urgent humanitarian and medical assistance.  

We are engaging with health authorities to assess how we can best provide support. We know from our years of experience in emergencies that people in affected areas will have urgent needs for shelter, non-food items, access to clean water and latrines, and emergency medical and trauma support.    

Our team is assessing how we can provide assistance to people and we stand ready to support the national response to this tragedy. 

RESPONDING TO EMERGENCIES 

As an independent, impartial medical humanitarian organisation, Médecins Sans Frontières can respond rapidly to emergency situations and deliver urgent medical treatment to people in need – no matter who they are. By making a donation, you can help ensure that we can be there to provide medical assistance during times of crisis. 

On 7 December, two medical evacuations were organised by the Geo Barents team: one for the nine-month pregnant woman to Malta by helicopter, the other for Fatima*, her newborn baby Ali* and her three other sons to Lampedusa. The latter was possible after negotiations to keep the family together, as the Maltese authorities had given no choice but to separate the family members.

In what ways can I donate to Medecins Sans Frontieres? 
Is my donation tax-deductible? 

Yes. Médecins Sans Frontières is endorsed by the Australian Tax Office as a Deductible Gift Recipient organisation. All donations made in Australia to Médecins Sans Frontières Australia over $2 are tax deductible.

Will I receive a tax receipt for my donation? 

Yes you will. For a one-off donation you will receive an instant receipt via email. For regular gifts, tax receipts are sent annually, towards the end of July. Please keep your address details updated so we can ensure you receive your tax receipt.

Can I donate to a specific country or project? 

We appreciate that some of our supporters may have a particular interest in a country or program in which we work. While in some (rare) circumstances it is possible to have your gift directed toward a specific program or country where we are currently working, we ask that you contribute unrestricted funding. By not restricting your contribution for a specific emergency or project, you will enable us to allocate our resources more efficiently and where the need is greatest.

Can I make my donation as a tribute in honour or memory of someone? 

In lieu of flowers, you can arrange to honour a friend or loved one with a memorial gift to Médecins Sans Frontières. You can either set up a memorial fund in memory of a friend or loved one, or make a donation in memory of someone special. Please visit the Giving in Memory page to find out how.
