Almost one year on, people fleeing Sudan’s violence continue to face an insufficient humanitarian response.

A diphtheria epidemic is currently raging in the Batha region of central Chad. Since June 2023, more than 825 cases and 36 deaths have been reported. 

A retrospective mortality survey carried out among Sudanese refugees in Chad documents the appalling scale of violence that swept through the region last June, while atrocities have continued in recent months in the region of El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur.

Sudanese refugees and returnees in eastern Chad, are desperately short of clean water. In Metche camp, refugees receive just six litres of water per person per day, compared to the 20 litres recommended in emergencies.

Refugees in eastern Chad are in dire need of food, water and healthcare, with many suffering from malaria, diarrhoea and malnutrition.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)  calls on the UN, international donors and humanitarian organisations to urgently respond to the vital needs of people in eastern Chad. 

People who have fled violence in Sudan are in urgent need of shelter, food, water, sanitation, healthcare and protection services.
