In the face of a severe lack of funding, the vital World Health Organization (WHO)-funded medical referrals system from 11 camps in Northeast Syria, including Al Hol camp, has ceased.

In northwest Syria, earthquake survivors still face the emotional aftermath and damage to infrastructure already weakened by a decade of war.

The women, men and children detained at Al-Hol camp grapple with numerous challenges, including limited access to water, inadequate sanitation facilities, and a healthcare system inhibited by restrictive security practices.

In 2012, a year after war broke out in Syria Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) opened a burn care unit in Atmeh, in northwestern Syria’s Idlib province. It is currently the only facility treating burn patients in northwestern Syria, home to more than more than 4.5 million people, most of whom are displaced. 

The coming winter poses significant health risks to the two million displaced people living in tents in Idlib province.

36 wounded people were received by MSF teams across the border in eastern Chad over the past weekend alone.

Obstetrician-gynaecologist Jared Watts has completed three assignments with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), working in Nigeria, Syria and more recently Sierra Leone. He spoke to us about his experience and how the role of an obstetrician-gynaecologist varies compared to working in remote Western Australia.  

Sally Thomas has done 10 assignments with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). She has a degree in architecture and a diploma in project management. She started her career with MSF by working as a construction logistics manager on a project in Nairobi in 2009, and then went on to work in Nigeria, South Sudan, Haiti, Ethiopia, Iraq, Yemen. She then took the position of deputy head of mission in Syria and her most recent assignment was in Libya. She spoke to us about her work overseas and what the role of a logistician involves.
