Disease - redirected

The facts are simple; childhood vaccines prevent people falling sick with diseases that kill. And the majority of the diseases that we vaccinate against are diseases that can kill.

Women walk for hours and sometimes days to get their children to clinics. Our field staff brave conflict zones to reach the most vulnerable.

An estimated 21.8 million infants worldwide are still missing out on basic vaccines for diseases like pneumonia, whooping cough, measles and tetanus.

Maternal Health - redirected

Many women across the world give birth without medical assistance, massively increasing the risk of complications or death. Ninety nine percent of these deaths are in developing countries. The majority are preventable with appropriate care.

We work with midwives and traditional birth attendants to establish programmes so complicated births can be identified quickly to help prevent maternal deaths.

The most common complications causing maternal death, accounting for nearly 75 percent of all maternal deaths, are:

  • postpartum haemorrhage
  • infection
  • eclampsia
  • complications from delivery
  • unsafe abortion

Médecins Sans Frontières provides lifesaving medical care to people in over 70 countries. Help us go where others won't.

As you read this, please.. sit down, close your eyes for 40 seconds and know how many peoples lives you have affected for the better this past year, how many faces have seen you as a sign of hope and gratefulness in torn-apart communities. Then remember how greatly you're missed by family and friends back home.. and how much they wish for your safety and happiness and how proud they are of you. I hope wherever you are in the world, your home away from home is filled with warm, kind and spirited souls that make this time wonderful for you. You do such a wonderful job. Be proud of how far you have come. Merry Christmas :)

To whichever of my role models is reading this, You are amazing. MSF is an amazing organisation that aligns so closely with my values, and I hope one day I will join you. The life of a field worker must be such a mix of intense up and downs, and I hope that you have more ups then downs over the holiday period and the rest of the year. I don't even know you, but I feel so proud of you and everything you've achieved so far, and everything you will accomplish in the future. Maybe one day we can work together. Until then, happy holidays, I hope you feel supported and inspired even if you're far from home.

Hi, In 1999 I remember travelling in Cambodia and seeing MSF workers in the field. At that time you had just been awarded your Nobel peace prize. I felt a strange sense of vicarious pride in your achievements and have been inspired by the work that you do ever since. Two weeks ago I graduated from medical school and it is my dream to join you one day when I have served my apprenticeship here in Oz. I appreciate that the work is hard, but know that all of us back home take enormous pride in your work. Merry Christmas

Just a quick note to say how much admiration I have for you and the utterly selfless work that you do year round, but especially at this time of the year. I can only imagine how tough it is to be away from family and friends over the holidays, but the gift of health and vital treatment that you are giving to those with whom you work all over the world is truly unique and I've no doubt those family members and friends are chest-burstingly proud of your generosity. I certainly cannot think of a greater example to set during this the season of giving and though I realise it's cliched, for what it's worth I humbly thank you for making the world a better place. Wishing you peace, happiness and a well earned beverage or six on your return!

The Christmas and New Year period is a wonderful time of year! And, there is no better way to celebrate the festive season than among friends. This time of year is for celebrating, whether it's religious celebration or enjoying quality time with family and friends; recounting the great times and maybe learning from the not-so-great times over the past year, as well as preparing for the new year ahead. As we join with loved ones to share in the spirit of the Christmas season, we are reminded of life's most important things - family, friends, health, wellbeing and community. Christmas can be a difficult time for some, so let's reach out to support those who are less fortunate. One of the best things about our organisation is the very real sense of community spirit. I have no doubt that our community and Christmas spirit will shine bright. I would like to say a special thank you to those in the communities who give their time at Christmas and throughout the year to helping others. And, thank you to my fellow friends for their valued support and continued hard work. Together we are working with the communities to make a difference. A very Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones, and may you have a happy, safe and prosperous new year. Alfred Wakeya - PNG
