I was wounded by artillery shelling by the Russian army from the left bank of the river. I was at the central market with my granddaughter... I was injured in the abdomen and hospitalised. I had to undergo surgery. But immediately after my operation, the hospital itself came under shelling. It was like a horror movie.

How is MSF responding in Ukraine?

MSF moved to a full emergency response mode in February 2022, initially developing medical evacuation trains, then moving into ambulance services, hospital support and primary healthcare. In 2024 and 2025, in near-frontline areas of the regions of Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Mykolaiv, Sumy and Zaporizhzhia, MSF teams provided medical support along a frontline stretching approximately 1,000 km.

MSF has continued to provide a wide range of services to Ukrainians. Between 2022 and 2025, this included providing more than 370,000 mobile clinic consultations.

In addition, in 2025 alone, MSF’s activities included:

  • 12,904 Emergency Room admissions
  • 10,722 ambulance referrals - 60 per cent of which were war-related
  • 795 patients starting rehab during acute medical treatment to prevent long-term disability
  • 1,053 surgeries performed or assisted
  • 552 patients were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
