Working in the Central Mediterranean since 2015, Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) teams continue to bear witness to an unacceptable and preventable loss of life on Europe’s borders. 

Australian communications manager Eloise Liddy and Belgian psychologist Hager Saadallah both recently worked on board our search and rescue ship, Geo Barents. 

Nurse Jacob Coleman, from Brisbane, was recently working with Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) as part of a team responding to COVID-19 in Mosul, Iraq. Following devastating flash floods on 11 April, the scale of damage to water, sanitation and sewage treatment systems in KwaZulu-Natal’s eThekwini Municipality is now clear.

To mitigate outbreaks of water-borne diseases, MSF mobile medical teams are consulting daily in the many halls, churches, tents and schools that serve as temporary shelters. These teams are supported by four MSF health promoters who walk the surrounding communities sharing information about water quality issues and risks, and connecting individuals left traumatised by the floods to MSF counsellors.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Kharkiv, the second largest city in the country, has been severely affected by the Russian offensive. While many fled the conflict, those who stayed have taken refuge in underground stations to escape the incessant bombing.

While thousands of people struggle to access vital healthcare in the northwest region of Cameroon, Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is still being prevented from resuming healthcare care services in the region.

For the past six months, this forced suspension of MSF's activities by Cameroonian authorities has denied people access to urgent and life-saving care. We're calling on the government of Cameroon to immediately lift this suspension and prioritise the medical needs of the population. 

In Kenya, stigma influences how mental health is addressed. For persons who use drugs and adolescents and young marginalised and vulnerable people, stigma and discrimination lead to not only social exclusion but also a public health crisis. 

MSF teams have mobilised to provide medical assistance to people fleeing intense violence in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique. Since attacks began March, hundreds of people have fled the coastal city of Palma to nearby towns in search of safety - most fleeing by foot and hiding in the bush for days.
