Geneva (MSF/ICRC) – Climate change is not a distant threat. It is already dramatically affecting vulnerable people across the globe. In particular, the changing climate is having devastating consequences for people living in conflict situations and those who don’t have access to basic health care.

Since September 20, 2022, the day the Ebola epidemic was declared in Uganda, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has been working alongside the Ministry of Health to support medical care in the country.

After Syria, where a cholera outbreak has now spread over most of the country, affecting 13 of the 14 governorates, on October 6th, 2022, the Minister of Public Health (MoPH) in Lebanon has also officially declared a cholera outbreak in the country.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is in Lebanon helping provide access to water, set up sanitation systems, and provide medical aid.

Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has started providing medical humanitarian assistance in Kiribati, as climate change exacerbates health risks in the country. 

Since September 2022, parts of Syria including north-east Syria and north-west Syria have been facing a major cholera outbreak. First linked to the contaminated water near the Euphrates River and the severe water shortage in the north of Syria, the outbreak has now spread across the country, and more than 13,000 suspected cases have been reported, including 60 deaths.

According to Raqqa National Hospital, this is the first time cholera has been confirmed in NES since 2007.

When 14-year-old Peter* started having epileptic seizures, a misdiagnosis only made things worse, and his mother feared he wouldn’t be able to return to school. Now on regular treatment, Peter looks forwarding to fulfilling his own dreams for the future, and his mother’s for him.

Since the declaration of the Ebola outbreak in Uganda on 20 September (and as of 2 October 2022), the Ugandan Ministry of Health has confirmed 43 cases of Ebola and reported 29 deaths (nine confirmed deaths from the disease and 20 probable). MSF is working with the Ministry of Health to set up an initial emergency response to help stop the disease from spreading further.
