The situation is worsening by the day for people living in Tougan, a town in the Boucle du Mouhoun region. Almost 20% of the children screened by Médecins Sans Frontières in this town in northwest Burkina Faso were found to be suffering from acute malnutrition. 

Following the shipwreck of 14 June which left up to 500 people dead or missing off the coast of Greece, Médecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has denounced EU migration policies, calling for accountability over the lives lost and for a dedicated, proactive, state-led search and rescue mechanism at sea.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) condemns in the strongest terms the murder of two of its employees in the Boucle du Mouhoun region, in northwestern Burkina Faso. The organisation is suspending its medical activities in the Boucle du Mouhoun region.

In 2022, MSF teams around the world continued to respond to crises, old and new. While COVID-19 was not the emergency it was in previous years, new challenges arose. The war in Ukraine escalated in February; the political, humanitarian and economic crises in Haiti deteriorated severely; cholera emerged on an exceptional scale in several countries. 

Three people have been found handcuffed and four others injured, reportedly from beatings, on the Greek island of Lesvos.
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams provided emergency medical care on the scene and referred the four injured people to hospital.

Months of tension and protests in Burkina Faso culminated in a military takeover on Monday 24 January. The political crisis adds to a fragile context characterised by an ongoing conflict with a dramatic downturn in security and rocketing displacement.

The crisis has left many people in Burkina Faso struggling to find food, water, shelter and medical care. Humanitarian organisations have also been hit by the violence, making it extremely challenging to provide much-needed aid. 

Psychologist Malcolm Hugo is one of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Australia’s most experienced field workers. He has completed more than 20 field assignments, including responding to some of the key humanitarian crises of recent times.

Nurses and midwives are the backbone of Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) multidisciplinary teams. They also fulfill diverse and critical roles in health promotion, patient education and community care. 

Throughout 2020, MSF is celebrating the efforts of nurses and midwives and highlighting their daily contributions in and alongside MSF projects.
