A week after cyclone Freddy, the most intense cyclone ever recorded by weather stations, hit southern Malawi between March 12 and 14, some districts and their populations are still reeling from the destruction. 

Cervical cancer is the second deadliest cancer in low- and middle-income countries.

In Malawi in East Africa, where Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) operates, over 4,000 Malawian women fall sick with cervical cancer every year. 

Cervical cancer accounts for 37 per cent of new cancers in women in Malawi. Since 2018, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has been working to reduce the incidence of cervical cancer and bring down deaths from the disease in the districts of Blantyre and Chiradzulu.

Since 3rd of March 2022, more than 33,600 confirmed people have been reported as having cholera in the country and more than 1,093 people died.

Nurses and midwives are the backbone of Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) multidisciplinary teams. They also fulfill diverse and critical roles in health promotion, patient education and community care. 

Throughout 2020, MSF is celebrating the efforts of nurses and midwives and highlighting their daily contributions in and alongside MSF projects.

Nicholas Menner, an electrician from Goolwa, South Australia, worked with Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in Malawi in mid-2019. He was involved in constructing the new operating theatre and inpatient ward opened in Blantyre in December 2019 to begin surgical treatment for cancer patients.
