Three months after thousands of people lost their lives in devastating floods caused by Storm Daniel, residents of the city of Derna are suffering the psychological aftermath of the disaster. MSF doctors and psychologists have been providing them with medical care and mental health support.  

Two weeks after Storm Daniel caused devastating floods that engulfed Derna, Libya, and killed thousands of people in just a few hours, search and rescue operations are about to end and reconstruction is starting.

MSF medical coordinator Manoelle Carton describes the situation in the Libyan cities of Derna and Susah, one week after the devastating floods caused by Storm Daniel.

A week after cyclone Freddy, the most intense cyclone ever recorded by weather stations, hit southern Malawi between March 12 and 14, some districts and their populations are still reeling from the destruction. 

Catastrophic flooding began in June, and the situation remains an emergency, with critical humanitarian needs. The current response is inadequate. The basic needs of people living in the worst flood-affected areas such as access to essential food assistance, healthcare and safe drinking water, remain unmet. 

In 2022, MSF teams around the world continued to respond to crises, old and new. While COVID-19 was not the emergency it was in previous years, new challenges arose. The war in Ukraine escalated in February; the political, humanitarian and economic crises in Haiti deteriorated severely; cholera emerged on an exceptional scale in several countries. 

In has been more than three months since devastating floods caused vast damage across Pakistan and displaced millions, but only in recent weeks have waters started to recede and people been able to return home. 

Major floods have hit central and southern Chad since mid-August, with the latest floods affecting the capital, N’Djamena, where rivers have burst their banks and whole neighbourhoods have been left underwater. 

International medical organisation Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has launched an emergency response to address the most acute needs of people left with minimal access to basic services and exposed to heightened risks of infectious disease outbreaks.
